According to the NY Times, women are still buying cosmetics (personal care is one of the few markets that doesn't tank in a recession), but they are chosing more subtle colors.
Hmmm, I am definitely chosing more subtle colors, especially in the eye department, but I assumed that was because greys are "in" and suddenly super bright colors are making my soon to be 35-year old eyes look older. Neutral eyes are suddenly more flattering. Am I picking up on a trend, just getting old or what?
I still like a pop of color on my cheeks and a pink lip. Posting my FOTD next with the BeneFit Coralista - swoooooooon!
I hope we don't go back to the neutral lip nightmare of the 90s, the light brown lipstick that looked good on absolutely no one and even worse, those that lined that lipstick with dark brown lipliner. THE HORROR!
Have you noticed this trend? Are you gravitating towards more subtle colors?
I've actually been doing more bold looks, like smokey eye, more bold fun colors and such. My justification is that if I can't spend a ton of money and find a higher paying job, I can at least have fun with how I look. The salon I frequent (and spend waaaaay too much money at) had an open house last night with doctors from a local aesthetic office, a massage therapist and a rep of a local optometrist with display frames. The docs were saying that they're actually doing more services now, because people are willing to spend money on looking better. I suspect a lot of it has to do with people who are over 50 who want to look younger to be more likely to get a job. A lot of employers are turning people over 50 away from jobs quoting longevity. It makes sense to me, but I find it really sad. However, it is true. If I look great, I usually feel good about myself, which really affects my reaction with the world, and the world's reaction to me.

I want to try to embrace the neutral trend, but I don't think I look right w/neutral shadows on. It doesn't seem like "me". Even though I keep trying. My BFF's sister still rocks the dark brown lipliner w/the nude lipstick. It kills me everytime I see her.

I find I have been choosing more subtle looks, too. From blush to eyeliner, I think a softer look is better. Not necessarily more natural, just some accents. But I still want my lashes to look extra full!
