Soooooo, I've been wanting to do this little project for quite some time now, but I just never got around to it.
I turned this...
Into this...
Ok, don't shun me for defacing these beautiful palettes, but I took my Urban Decay Book of Shadows and Urban Ammo Palette and turned them into one palette. I have been having the Book of Shadows for a few months and can count on one hand how many times I have used it. The same goes for the Urban Ammo Palette, and I have had that one for a lot longer. The Book of Shadows is so darn big it doesn't fit with the rest of my makeup, so I have to keep it separate, and thus never gets any love. The Urban Ammo Palette is kept underneath my slew of NARS eyeshadows and I never want to move them all to get to the palette.
So it was project time. I bought two empty eyeshadow palettes from Coastal Scents. They are not magnetized (like MAC palettes) and are smaller and a little bit taller than a MAC palette...and a lot cheaper.
I took all the empty pans out and peeled back the foam insert.
And that leaves you with an empty palette.
I started with my Book of Shadows. I took one of my mothers good kitchen knives (she would kill me for using one of her "good" ones) and peeled back the four sides of the palette.
And it looks like layers of cardboard. So, I took the knife and separated the top layer and started to peel it back and totally off.
And I did another layer.
I took the knife and carefully cut the eyeshadow pan away from the cardboard.
There was a little spot of glue and cardboard stuck to the back of the pan. So I took the knife and kind of "shaved" off what I couldn't pull off with my fingers.
There was just a little bit of glue left on the back, so I soaked it on a paper towel that I had saturated with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol helps loosen up the glue.
Almost done!!!
Once I cleaned off all the backs, I placed them into the empty palette.
I was originally just planning on doing the Book of Shadows, but after seeing how nice it looked and I had all that extra space in the palette just screaming for some more eyeshadows. So, I got my Urban Ammo Palette and emptied that one out too.
Instead of totally ruining this palette like the Book of Shadows, I just used the point of my knife, slid it between the pan and the cardboard of the palette, and lifted it out of its spot.
OMG, it was sooo much easier. I probably could have done the same with the Book of Shadows.
I cleaned off the back of those pans and placed them in my palette.
I thought about taking some of the pop ups from the Book of Shadows and gluing them to the top of the palette for decoration and so I know that its Urban Decay shadows in there, since I have more than one of these blank palettes. But I figured that would eventually get all messed up.
Well, you know how Urban Decay is all edgy and stuff. You know, they use a lot of skulls and guns and the like on their palettes and on their website. So, I had a skull car window decal and I put that on the top of the palette. I was originally going to put it on my car window, but I had changed my mind after I bought it. ( It wasn't really that expensive, so it wasn't a big deal) You know, since I became an x-ray tech, I have a thing for skulls now. I have a few t-shirts and some jewelry with skulls on it. But thats off the subject.
Isn't that cute? Well, I think it is.
I haven't decided how I am going to make them stay in the palette, because right now I have to keep the palette level or they will just go sliding all over the place. I either have to magnetize it or just use some super glue and glue them down. I think I will go with the glue method, its cheaper and easier, and I don't plan on moving the shadow pans around either. I need to make a little label or something to put on the back of the cover with the names of the eyeshadows on it. I'm not sure how I will do that yet...or if I even will.
Overall, I am quite pleased with it. I will fit in with the rest of my makeup, instead of being an outsider. And will eventually get more love.
I couldn't bring myself to doing the same with the Urban Decay Deluxe Shadow Palette. Its just toooo pretty. I may do the Foreshadow Palette and add it to the empty space between the two palettes. It has the same cover and the Deluxe Palette, but is only four of the regular eyeshadows. Hmmmm, I'll have to find that palette...
Good ideas, yes? no?
I also posted this on my blog www.jackieg02.blogspot.com Check it, there is some other stuff there too.
Great crafty work Jackie!! That is something I definitely need to do too! And I will gladly destroy my book of shadows to make it fit in my drawer too! Ok, you have inspired me to craft it up and make some better palettes. I may make the CD case ones, and get some magnetic sheets from Michaels. I hope I have as much luck as you did! :)

great idea!! if i were you, i'd put the colors that are the same next to each other and mess with arranging the others and then maybe get some new foam and put that in to hold them in place? there's always the risk of it all falling out though, so magnetic sheets should like a pretty solid plan! i am so tempted to do this now... my book of shadows is a PAIN to get open.
