I finally found a shampoo combo that I really like (I alternate between 3 brands - but don't use any other product in my hair) except for this build up on my scalp I'd like to get rid of. My grandmother started going on about some vinegar concoction... but I'd rather not smell like a chip truck...

Ha!! Love the profile pick! Vinegar is good for rinsing build-up off of hair, but I'm not too sure about the scalp ... and yes, the cravings for fries may be the big negative! What kind of buildup is it on your scalp? If it is (sort to be graphic) kinda crusty, this shampoo from Ducray works really well http://www.escentual.com/ducray/ducray/ducray00... that was the only link I could find, but you can get it at Shoppers Drug Mart in the same aisle as Vichy. But that may not be what you mean ...

Not crusty... I can't think of how to describe it... oily but gritty. Ugh... so gross! The opposite of crusty/flaky.. I guess.

Have you tried a clarifying shampoo? if it is gritty, it sounds like (a beach! lol) a scalp condition ... a good thing to bring up at your next doctor's appt, in case you run out of things to say ;)

Clarifying shampoo! Thank you. I couldn't think of the word Clarifying.

oh, i remember when i tried apple vinegar on my hair and a day later i went to the gym and it started smelling like vinegar around me cuz i was working our so hard haha....
but for ur problem i suggest a tea tree shampoo...Paul Mitchell has a line that's tea tree-based, and i've heard very good things abt it~

you can always just mix some baking soda into your regular shampoo -about one tbsp. and it will work as a clarifyer ... the vinegar is better for bringing shine out in your hair.

oh and are they dry flakes or oily ones - different ones need different products.

good luck!
cheers!

oh my god, i get that a lot too.after like a month of using and abusing my flat iron, my serum, the hairspray, all of the masks and conditioners one of top of another.. my hair looks kinda "heavy" and it even gets hard to style.
i recommend the clarifying shampoo from pantene, works really good for me. it's like a gel, has almost no conditioner, so it cleans out the hair deeply. :)

what would Jesus not do?

Using the baking soda really does work. My cousin owns his own salon and has been in business many years and he does recommend the baking soda especially if you use alot of product in your hair. I just add a small hand full and mix it with my regular shampoo and wash really well and then re-wash with just my regular shampoo and it does remove the buildup and it is a inexpensive way of doing so without buying a special clarifying shampoo. Also, if you rinse your hair or even do a treatment on it using canned or boxed coconut milk it really nourishes your hair and brings out the shine. I love baking soda ..its great for your teeth ..your nails ...hair ...its just a good cheap product that gives good results ...
